SOUTHLAND'S STORY STARTS IN 2015

With a long flight back from Japan to the Kruger National Park

Our Story

Southland Coffee is a family business.

In 2015, Wendren Setzer embarked on a business trip to Japan, a country renowned for its culture of precision and innovation. While staying in a hotel, she discovered something intriguing: pre-packaged coffee sachets designed for pour-over brewing. Excited by the idea but disappointed by the mediocre coffee quality, Wendren had an epiphany—what if this concept was paired with premium coffee?

At the same time, her husband Jeremy and their daughter were enjoying the wilderness of the Kruger National Park on a camping trip. Inspired, Wendren flew back to South Africa, sachets in hand, to share her discovery. Jeremy, a passionate coffee purist, immediately saw the potential. Together, they began to imagine what these sachets could achieve with high-quality beans, precision grinding, and thoughtful packaging. The concept promised a revolutionary way to enjoy premium coffee anywhere—no fancy equipment required.

The idea soon became an obsession. Jeremy meticulously sourced the best filter bags, perfected the grind size and bean grammage, and worked out the branding and printing details. Countless cups of coffee were brewed, sampled, and tweaked until Southland Pour-Over Coffee was born.

Today, Southland Pour-Over Coffee is a trailblazer in the South African coffee scene, holding the distinction of being the first in the market. The company continues to lead the way, collaborating with local roasters to bring the best coffee to customers, all while supporting the local coffee community with customizable low-minimum-order quantities (MOQs).

Southland packs are found everywhere—from guesthouses and hotels to wedding tables and campgrounds—making premium coffee accessible anytime, anywhere.

Where did the name come from?

The name Southland emerged during a long road trip from Ais-Ais, Namibia, back to Cape Town.

Driving southward, the Setzers dreamed of a brand that reflected the spirit of adventure, quality, and the beauty of the southern hemisphere.

    .

And, after all, a city where some of the greatest roasters in South Africa can be found!
